We are in GIUSVALLA, a small town in the up-country of Liguria, located about 45 km West of Genoa and about 20 km North West of Savona.

The wonderful location of GIUSVALLA is immediately North of the watershed of the Appennines of Liguria, 475 metres above sea level (about 1500 feet). GIUSVALLA can be reached by driving along the ancient panoramic route of Provincial Road 542 that joins the town to Dego, Pontinvrea and Varazze, going towards Genoa.

The area around Giusvalla borders Piedmont in the North (the province of Alessandria) and the municipalities of Pontinvrea, Mioglia, Dego, Pareto, Spigno Monferrato and Cairo Montenotte. This territory became a strategical site for communications in the past, drawing a dividing line between the Padana Plain and the sea.

The town counts  450 inhabitants and is placed in a valley dominated by the ruins of an ancient Aleramic Castle and the Abbey of St. Salvatore, and ancient building from the Xth Century destroyed during the Saracen Invasion. The borough is crossed by a double row of old black locusts from the Napoleonic Times.

Split in several smaller fractions, GIUSVALLA extends upon sweet sloping green hills of meadows and rich vegetation. Woods of broad-leaved trees, conifers, beech and chestnut trees where many types of flowers and mushrooms grow, are home to several families of mild deers, boars, birds and foxes that live by the water courses crossing the region.

Such an uncontaminated natural environment is ideal for pleasant country walks, horse riding and mountain biking along the many suggested itineraries.

The privileged position of GIUSVALLA, in the end, also allows to reach the sea resorts of Varazze, Celle Ligure, Albisola and Savona in little less than 30 minutes. This makes GIUSVALLA the ideal place for a quiet runaway from the hot and busy shores of Liguria to the cool, calm and starry nights of the hinterland that grant peaceful morning awakenings among the sounds of nature.

A BRIEF HISTORY OF GIUSVALLA

The region of Giusvalla was renamed several times between the Xth and XVth century.
At the beginning it was known as “Visiovallis loco et fundo”. This was the territory where the Abbey destroyed by the Saracens in 930 A.C. had been built.

The name indicated a territory that was positioned upon an elevated plain looking down the valley where the Torrent named “Valla” flew (merging with the “Bormida” River). In the later centuries the name changed to:

- 1014: Valla, terra et corte (Valla, land and court)
- 1142: Casalibus de Valla  (Valla’s Huts)
- 1178: Villam, quae dicitur Visvalla (Town, called Visvalla)
- Between 1223 and 1469: Jusvallae  (New Valla)
- XVIth onwards: Giesvalla and eventually Giusvalla.
